Our first show: Low key: Brunswick Social in Bris.Luke was really just playing ‘DJ’ via Abelton whereas usually he’ll be playing bass throughout the show and drive Abelton via a bank of foot-switches.
This show was fully rushed: Within the 12 weeks prior to the show we moved from Logic Pro 8 over to Cubase 7 (learned how to use Cubase from Scratch), composed, recorded and arranged 12 songs, and learned how to use Abelton the night before the show.
We were lucky enough to have guests in the form of Linus Monsour and Ed from AAA tribe so altogether we put on a 4 hour show and people grooved.
We finished writing the tracks for this set one night before the show. It was a pretty low key affair but we obtained ‘proof of concept’ and people danced. Dancing is good.
There were a couple of tech, and sound issues we encountered that night but we now have them covered for the future.
Performance note: Kayla had never sung any of the tracks in their final form: she had only previously worked through them in the studio as separate parts before Luke then arranged the takes on the sequencer. What you see on the attached vid footage is Kayla and Luke working through the arrangements in real time for the first time. She did it faultlessly. A true professional.
Jonny Ruddy also graced us with his soulful presence and performed ‘Flying Free’ and ‘Clouds of Delight’. It was good but we didn’t get any useful footage of it unfortunately. Ed from AAA Tribe was driving the camera about the time Jonny came on and decided the mirror ball was very interesting. And the sconces on the walls. True story. When you see him play live you’ll understand entirely.
Big ups to Tristan and Michael at the Brunswick for letting us trial the machine there.
